January 2019


We hope you had a relaxing and pleasant festive season and are looking forward to the year ahead.  The LISW branch have some interesting events lined up for this year, some of which are set out below, as well as our upcoming AGM & CPD Day on 3rd April (details to be released shortly).


Following the departure of several members of the committee, we will be looking for new committee members at our 2019 AGM, particularly in the roles of secretary and events officer – this is your chance to shape the themes and topics discussed at events across our region.  If you would like to get involved or support the committee, in whatever capacity, please get in touch!

CDM Differently: The application of the CDM Regulations for Landscape Professionals,

Friday 18th January 2019 2pm- 5pm

This seminar, presented by Colin Moore, will consider developments in design risk management techniques over the past 20 years, and discuss the duties various parties are given by the CDM Regulations, including what landscape architects need to do when they are, and when they are not, the Principal Designer as well as the application of the regulations to landscape and maintenance works.  Please click here or below for more information and to book a place.

Role and Purpose of Design Review Panels: Landscape Architects,

Thursday 28th February 2019 6pm- 7.30pm

The LISW is hosting a panel debate and Q+A session about the role and purpose of design reviews with a focus on landscape architects.  Design review by an independent panel of experts is an increasing part of the pre-application planning process now embedded in the NPPF, where the expertise of landscape architects is much needed to help steer and inform future development.  The event will be held in Exeter and panellists include review members for the Bristol Urban Design Forum and Creating Excellence South West.

Do you work on projects in Wales…. Important SUDS Legislation changes

From 7 January 2019, all new developments of more than 1 dwelling house or where the construction area is 100m2 or more, will require Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) for surface water.

From this date onwards, SuDS on new developments must be designed and built in accordance with the Statutory SuDS Standards published by the Welsh Ministers and SuDS Schemes must be approved by the local authority acting in its SAB role, before construction work begins.
